Based solely on ambition, Drake Mallard would have made a fine superhero. As it was, the citizens of St. Canard got the next best thing. Their fate rested in the hands of Drake’s alter ego, the slightly inept but highly resilient costumed crime-fighter, Darkwing Duck. With capabilities largely exceeded by his ego, Darkwing battled the villainous underworld to keep his city safe and, of equal importance, for the notoriety and fame.

Not alone in his fight, Darkwing occasionally had the assistance of his number one (and possibly only) fan, the pilot Launchpad McQuack — originally from the Duck Tales series. On numerous occasions, Darkwing’s spirited, adopted daughter Gosalyn and her brainy best friend Honker, from the next-door Muddlefoot family — who were as dim-witted as Honker was smart — also found themselves mixed up in Darkwing’s crime fighting excursions.

Touting himself the “terror that flaps in the night”, Darkwing battled, among others, such insidious baddies as the bull mob boss Taurus Bulba, the spotlessly clean Ammonia Pine, a scientist-turned-plant named Bushroot, and Megavolt, an electrically charged rat who brought appliances to life. At times when requested, Darkwing even took on assignments for the intelligence agency S.H.U.S.H., which acted as a counter to the terrorist organization F.O.W.L.

Darkwing Duck debuted as a preview-run on The Disney Channel in April 1991, then moved to a wider audience that fall when new episodes appeared both on ABC’s Saturday morning lineup and in weekday syndication as part of The Disney Afternoon.
