A small excitable duck — only slightly easier to understand than his more famous relative in the sailor suit — Yakky Doodle needed considerable guidance in the art of recognizing danger. Stalked by the likes of Fibber Fox and Alfy Gator, Yakky would surely have perished if not for his good pal Chopper, a friendly but formidable bulldog whose protection prevented Yakky’s early demise.
Yakky Doodle made his first appearance in 1960 in an episode of Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy, which led to the character getting his own segment on the newly created Yogi Bear Show one year later. But he never became a superstar in the world of cartoons, and when The Yogi Bear Show ended in 1962, Yakky Doodle’s career as a headliner followed suit. Afterwards, Yakky’s fate was that of most Hanna-Barbera characters from that era: appearing now and then on ensemble shows like Scooby’s All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and Wacky Races.

Remember the promo? “I’m not a feathered accomplice, I am a Duck”
After school my brother and me watched Yogi Bear and Chopper and Yaki would come on, it turned out that this was my mothers best show, so much so that she named the family dog “Chopper” and a cannery she bought “Yaki”. She would laugh so much when Chopper would say; “better close your eyes little buddy” before he pounded the fox, or the cats that always bothered the duck, or threatened him. She enjoyed Yaki’s voice when he talked or called for help. Even when “Yaki” would warn the bothersome thing “they’re gonna be sorry when Chopper shows up. It would have been nice if Chopper and Yaki had their own show, because they always were not on the Yogi Bear show. That show had other extra cartoons as well. But this was one memorable ones for sure.
