Captain Caveman originally appeared in the 1977 series Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, and later in 1980 in his own, self-titled segment on The Flintstone Comedy Show. In 1986 he teamed up with his son Cavey Jr. to fight crime in the Stone Age town of Bedrock as a segment on The Flintstone Kids.
The segment was actually a show-within-a-show, airing as a TV program in Bedrock. The youngsters from The Flintstone Kids (Betty, Wilma, Barney, Fred and friends) enthusiastically gathered to watch their favorite show when the newest episode aired. This short scene segued into the Captain Caveman and Son segment itself, where the world’s first superhero teamed up with his son to fight crime.
When the police of Bedrock were outmatched, the town Commissioner relied on the heroic and hairy Captain Caveman and his equally hairy son, Cavey Jr., to keep the criminal element in check. Like his father, Cavey Jr. owned a utility club filled with useful gadgets that allowed him to fly. Unlike his father, Cavey Jr. could speak in complete, unbroken sentences, and he normally took the role of keeping his befuddled, bumbling father on the correct course during the mission at hand.
Captain Caveman and Son, along with The Flintstone Kids, ran for two seasons on ABC’s Saturday morning lineup. The series returned briefly to Saturday morning at the start of 1990 before being put into the rotation of the syndicated package The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera.
