Green Lantern was one of several DC Comics based superhero segments that formed part of the 60-minute series, The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure. Filmation produced a total of three, 7-minute stories featuring Green Lantern.
Residing on planet Earth in the guise of test pilot Hal Jordan, Green Lantern was entrusted by the Guardians of the Universe — an immortal race of aliens from the planet Oa in the center of the universe — with the task of defending Earth and its space sector from the power-hungry villains of the universe.
Green Lantern’s special abilities derived from his power ring: a powerful device given to him by the Guardians that emitted green bands of energy the ring’s wearer could form into any shape. The power of the ring was limited only by its user’s imagination and by its inability to affect anything colored yellow (although the cartoon chose to ignore this restriction). The ring also had to be charged every 24 hours by a portable, green Power Lantern (thus the moniker “Green Lantern”).
A Venusian named Kairo assisted Hal Jordan as his mechanic/sidekick. Typically, Kairo had the blue skin and pointy ears of his race, and because he had no super powers was prone to need rescuing, although he did contribute a fair amount as well.
In addition to his own segment, Green Lantern participated with other superheroes in the show’s team-based segment, Justice League of America. Although his initial foray into the animated landscape was short lived, Green Lantern later joined Hanna-Barbera’s version of the JLA as a supporting member of the Super Friends in several of its incarnations.
